This scene, "A Major Disappointment," is the first build I've completed for my second round in the ABS Builder Challenge, an online competition where builders are tasked with implementing a "seed part"—in this case, a silver goblet—creatively into as many builds as possible.
In this particular model, the goblet becomes the pillars of a balustrade. As soon as I horizontally lined up a few of those cups, I knew what I wanted them to become; the rest of the scene formed up naturally around this architectural feature. At first, this was going to be a scene directly pulled from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, but on reviewing the clip I had in mind, where Norrington is about to propose to Elizabeth and she falls into the ocean below, I realized the balustrade I'd designed wasn't present anywhere. As such, I opted for a more generic cast of characters, instead, and the license that went with it.
I loved selecting vibrant expressions for the disappointed Major, the flustered would-be-fiancee, and the snickering soldiers. Those, and the flower-boxes behind, were my favorite parts of this build to design. A little Easter egg on this build is the lady's black fan, which was actually the seed part in my first ABS Challenge round.
